  • I saw the IOWA BB-61 on October 19 1984 docking at Pier 1 from the B train when the conductor announced "this is something you'll never see again". I walked back over on the Brooklyn Bridge and took this shot. The IOWA was launched from the Brooklyn Navy Yard on February 23, 1943.

Bendix Aviation licensed the name to an appliance corporation, who actually made washing machines, in 1936. At the time I worked for Bendix Aerospace in New Jersey and took this photo as a joke.

  • I was more than suprised to discover that what I thought was a blackened doorway revealed not only the washing machines inside but that you could see the instructions for operating the extractors! Detail from:
