Flushing Archives

The images in this gallery capture Flushing from the 1950's to the present. Many photos were taken from the same location over this span of time, they show both enduring landmarks and dramatic change. Since starting this site over 4 years ago I have been continuing to get a great response for pictures from my old home town, now averaging about 10,000-20,000 views a month. I will be revising an expanded version of a Flushing History photobook for 2013 so keep posted. Requests and comments are always welcome!

39th Ave looking East toward Union Street. A seemingly inert picture of the just completed Municipal Parking structure on January 22, 1965. Revealed in the insets below are a Barry Goldwater campaign sticker, from his ill-fated presidential bid a couple of months earlier, and a corner grocery store that's still a grocery store over 45 years later!
A quaint view of the Municipal Parking lot from 1/22/65. It will be replaced by a gargantuan development of 620 upscale residential condominiums, 275,000-square-feet of new retail space, hotel and/or office uses and a new state-of-the-art home for the Flushing YMCA. All this will be served by a 1,600-space parking garage, once and for all solving Flushing's parking and congestion problems.
