Flushing Archives

The images in this gallery capture Flushing from the 1950's to the present. Many photos were taken from the same location over this span of time, they show both enduring landmarks and dramatic change. Since starting this site over 4 years ago I have been continuing to get a great response for pictures from my old home town, now averaging about 10,000-20,000 views a month. I will be revising an expanded version of a Flushing History photobook for 2013 so keep posted. Requests and comments are always welcome!

The cover reads: John J. Bowes Iron Works, 227-228 W. 29th Street. John Bowes purchased the 7 story Manhattan building in 1875 (it was a shirt factory) on January 6, 1909 they had their fifth fire in five years causing $3,000 in damage; it was replaced in 1927 by a building that is still there. One of their jobs was the supplying the coal fired boilers for the Lincoln School (Public School 23) in Flushing Queens. This coal delivery chute is still there in the back of the building on Union Street and 35th Ave., from February 4th, 2011.
The Lincoln School built in 1898 (later known as Public School 23), from February 4, 2011, with a 1950's era Fallout Shelter sign still in place.
